Three interesting film events to check out this August / September

We hope everyone is enjoying the final days of summer and the continued good weather.

We wanted to highlight a few upcoming film events that may be of interest to programmers and audiences alike.

NATIONAL CINEMA DAY – Saturday 31st August

The popular annual iniative returns to cinemas across Ireland.

Participating cinemas across the country will be offering €5 (RSP) tickets all day – all seats, all shows, all formats. That includes new Irish releases like Kneecap, Mrs Robinson and Oddity, as well as other international & independent films such as Touch, Sing Sing and Black Dog. That’s on top of blockbusters, family favourites and re-releases.

Over 99% of full-time cinemas in the Republic of Ireland are participating in this initiative (which is supported by Fis Éireann / Screen Ireland), with over 217,000 admissions in a single day last National Cinema Day. Best of luck to all the cinemas taking part! More info is available on the National Cinema Day website.

DUBLIN INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL – 3rd / 4th September, Light House Cinema

This festival highlights a selection of Irish and international filmmakers of independent cinema, across a programme featuring feature films and shorts.

With a total of 15 films showing across the two days, the programme includes two feature films – Slide from US animator Bill Plympton, and the Slovakian film Invalid from director Jonáš Karásek.

You can find out more about the festival via the festival’s social media pages. Entrance to the screenings is free.

DISSOLUTIONS 2024 – 6th / 7th September, The Complex Dublin

Dissolutions is a new experimental film festival presented by aemi in Dublin.

The two-day programme features a selection of experimental shorts and features, as well as talks and workshops. The opening film is The Buriti Flower (directed by Joao Salaviza & Renée Nader Messora). Shot over 15 months in several villages in the Krahô territory of Central Brazil, the film is the result of years of working with and alongside the indigenous communities in the region.

Full info about the programme and guests is available on the aemi website.
